Water Conservation Facts

Water savings resulting from Falcon Waterfree urinals is estimated to be more than 6 billion gallons per year, and rapidly increasing. This represents the accumulative water savings resulting from the total number of Falcon Waterfree urinals that have gone into service around the world. Falcon Waterfree urinals are gaining in popularity due to their ability to eliminate water consumption while improving restroom hygiene and reducing operating costs. Patented Falcon Waterfree technology delivers the ultimate “muda” solution.

PUTTING 20 BILLION GALLON SAVINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE

  • Enough water to fill 4 million tank trucks.
  • Enough water to fill 30,303 Olympic-size swimming pools.
  • Enough water to fill 128 billion venti-size coffees. These cups, if stacked end-to-end, would circle the earth 487 times.
  • 5.2 billion gallons saved by waterfree urinals each year is enough to provide basic needs for up to 1 billion people (World Water Assessment Programme).

WHY IS THIS SIGNIFICANT?

  • Less than 1% of the world’s water is available for human use (U.S. Geological Survey).
  • World population is projected to reach 9 billion in 2050, but the available water on Earth will not change.
  • The availability of potable water is a constraint for economic development.
  • Drought-stricken areas suffer from increased economic and health-related hardships.
  • The water and sanitation crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns (2006 UN Human Development Report).

SAVING A LIMITED WATER SUPPLY, ONE URINAL AT A TIME

  • Falcon Waterfree urinals save up to 40,000 gallons or more per year, per urinal.
  • There are an estimated 54 million flush urinals in the world. If only 10 percent were converted to waterfree, up to 216 billion gallons of water would be saved each year (enough to fill 327,272 Olympic swimming pools).
  • A facility with 25 waterfree urinals may save 1 million gallons of water per year.

REDUCING ENERGY USE

  • Falcon Waterfree urinals require that no water be pumped to or from the urinal, resulting in reduced overall energy demand.
  • Every billion gallons of water conserved avoids 18 million pounds of CO2 emissions (Pacific Institute water-to-air model).
  • Conservation with waterfree urinals is more energy efficient than developing alternative water sources. For example, desalinization consumes 7 times more energy than ground water procurement (Pacific Institute data).

PROVIDING HEALTHIER RESTROOMS

  • Independent studies show flush-style urinals have five times more bacteria than waterfree urinals because water provides a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Waterfree urinals reduce the spread of bacteria in restrooms because there is no flush plume. Flushes produce an aerosol plume that reaches every surface in the room. With no flush, there is no spread.
  • Touch-free urinals mean there is little chance of bacteria transfer.

COST SAVINGS

  • Using fresh water to dispose of urine, which itself is about 97 percent water, makes no economic sense.
  • Waterfree urinals are less expensive to purchase and install because they have no flushing mechanism. In new construction projects, costs are even lower because water supply lines are not required.
  • Waterfree urinals save 100 percent of the water and sewer charges associated with flush urinals.
  • Because there are no flush valves in waterfree urinals, all valve maintenance is eliminated. Routine maintenance is a simple spray-and-wipe process, requiring less cleaning chemicals.
  • With no water pipes, maintenance fees due to clogging or leaking are eliminated.
  • Flushometer leaks can be difficult to detect, costly to repair, and waste tens of thousands of gallons of water per urinal.

FALCON WATERFREE BACKGROUND

  • Founded in 2000, Falcon Waterfree Technologies is a privately held developer, manufacturer and supplier of advanced waterfree urinal technology for commercial, institutional, and government facilities. Falcon Waterfree conducts business on every continent, with manufacturing in nine countries and offices and affiliates in 33 nations. Falcon Waterfree urinals are marketed around the world as Falcon Waterfree, Sloan Waterfree, Ideal Standard, Porcher, and Armitage Shanks brands. The heart of the product is a patented cartridge that provides a safe, sanitary seal.
