U.S. Census reports from 2010 indicate that the population of Los Angeles is roughly 4 million residents. And even though California has been plagued by severe drought in recent years, experts estimate that L.A. residents are literally flushing 5.8 billion gallons of fresh water a year in restrooms alone.
This staggering statistic has lead many facility managers in the city to reassess their environmental impact, setting a goal on water conservation. The Staples Center is one such example. Since its construction in 1999, the home of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks has focused heavily on establishing programs and initiatives that are environmentally conscious, including the installation of water-free urinals throughout the 950,000 square foot facility.

Woodstock also happens to be home to one of the greenest buildings in the entire country. That building is the current corporate headquarters for Mac upgrade and accessory maker Other World Computing. Ars recently had an opportunity to take a tour of the facility and look into some of its impressive green "features." We also spoke with CEO Larry O'Connor about how the drive to build such an environmentally friendly building is the same drive that pushed him to build OWC's Mac-friendly business in the first place, quite literally with his bare hands.

"The earth's most precious resource is fresh water," he reminded in his acceptance speech, underlining that statement with some statistics: "There are over 100 million water guzzling urinals in the world. They each waste an average of 40,000 gallons. We have installed 350,000 waterless urinals throughout the world, saving 14 billion gallons of water per year."

Nick Offerman and Aubrey Plaza, acting like their "Parks and Recreation" characters, introduced Marc Nathanson and his company's waterless urinal.
"That's the sexiest phrase I've ever heard in my life - waterless urinal. He must get a lot of ladies," Plaza joked.
Timberlake quipped, "If you told me that I was going to see Norman Lear and a urinal on the same stage in one evening, I would've said you were crazy. But nevertheless, this is L.A."
Twenty years ago, building owners were predominantly concerned with maintaining a clean and orderly restroom; little or no thought was given to the environment.
On April 10, 1992, Jane Applegate wrote an article for the Los Angeles Times titled, "Clean Restrooms Can Help Firm Sparkle."
Jane stated, "Dealing with a dirty restroom may not be high on your priority list. But, when you deal with the public, cleanliness boosts your business success."
This has not changed in the last 20 years; a clean bathroom is still a priority for any facility.
For much of Los Angeles’ early history, resource allocation meant bringing water to its citizens through remarkably ingenious means (We’ll divert a lake!) but little foresight (We’ll suck it dry in a decade!). Contemporary L.A. does better in regulating its profligate thirst, but as Krug sees it, there are new frontiers of water conservation that beg to be explored.
